Choosing a yoga approach that fits your style.

There are many types of yoga to fit many different personality styles. Choosing a yoga approach that fits you well is important as the benefits of yoga are fully reached with regular practice of this time-honored exercise. Here are some of the most common types of yoga that you will find in American Yoga studios and gyms.

  1. Hatha  

    Hatha yoga refers to almost all yoga found in the western hemisphere. It simply means yoga that teaches you to form postures with part or all of your body. Classes advertised as a Hatha Yoga are usually beginner yoga classes. This is a great place to start if you have never done yoga before.

  2. Bikram

    Bikram yoga is yoga that is done in a hot room. Bikram Choudhury, the founder of this yoga practice, insists the postures are always performed in the same sequence. If the postures are performed in a different sequence, the class is called Hot Yoga instead. Hot Yoga, like the name implies, is also performed in a hot room. If you like to sweat, Bikram or Hot yoga may be the practice for you.

  3. Vinyasa

    Vinyasa yoga is a good choice if you like to keep moving and enjoy a physical challenge. Vinyasa yoga emphasizes the flow of movements and often the classes are choreographed and set to music.

  4. Restorative

    Restorative Yoga focuses on passive poses that allow the body to rest and relax without effort. Often classes use props to help you maintain these poses while you sink into a deep state of relaxation and restoration. Mmmmmmm……
